The AGO is, without a doubt, my favorite sanctuary in Toronto. There’s something about the way the space is designed that just forces you to slow down and breathe. The architecture alone, especially the Frank Gehry-designed Galleria Italia, is breathtaking. Watching the light filter through that glass curve, especially on a quiet weekday morning, is a spiritual experience. I’m consistently impressed by how they balance the classics with such bold, contemporary installations. Whether I’m visiting for the permanent Indigenous and Canadian collections or catching a limited-run exhibit, I always leave feeling like my perspective has shifted a little bit. It’s not just a place to look at paintings; it’s a space that encourages you to think about the world differently. It’s incredibly rare to find a place in a city this busy that feels so profoundly serene. I love grabbing a coffee at the café after wandering through the galleries and just sitting with my thoughts. If you need a break from the noise of downtown and want to immerse yourself in something beautiful and deeply considered, the AGO is the only place I’d recommend. What is more pleasant after a fun and interesting art gallery visit than a well prepared beautifully served meal. We had dinner at the AGO BISTRO after a gallery visit. Interesting decor throughout the restaurant holds the feel of the art gallery throughout. We had the hamburger and fries which was excellent and we also had the salmon Niçoise, which was a warm plate of perfectly cooked salmon served in the style of a Niçoise salad, green beans, potatoes, a beautiful sauce and a soft boiled egg, wonderful! The hostess was particularly helpful. She went out of her way to seat us where we could enjoy a view of Dundas Street. I would definitely come here again if I was in the area, even if I wasn’t visiting the art gallery! Meal type: Dinner Price per person: CA$30–40 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
