Located just off Dean Street, a short walk up , Speak in Code is currently a bit difficult to find due to the ongoing roadworks a short distance away and it’s a squeeze getting to it to get to the entrance and spotting the SIC sign outside. Once inside, the venue has a low-lit, intimate atmosphere with table seating that suits the cocktail bar concept. One disappointing aspect was that they refuse to take table bookings. Even after visiting in person, they wouldn’t reserve a table, which wasn’t ideal. Another downside is the strict 90-minute table limit. It doesn’t really give you enough time to enjoy two cocktails at a relaxed pace—you end up rushing the second drink, which detracts from the experience. Drinks Demo 5 * Maker’s Mark Bourbon * Textures of peach * Miso * Savoury vermouth amaro This was initially disappointing. The bourbon completely dominated the drink, making it feel quite one-dimensional. However, when the server asked for feedback, I mentioned this and they took it away to adjust it. The revised version was much better, with more pronounced peach skin notes, better salinity from the miso, and a far more balanced flavour. It became a very enjoyable cocktail once all the components were allowed to shine. Demo 2 * Ceder’s * Gummies * Chartreuse Elixir * Kiwi soda A fresh, light cocktail that worked really well—ideal for summer and easy to drink. Service The service was a highlight. Staff were interactive, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in feedback about the cocktails, which made the experience feel much more personal. One thing missing was any complimentary accompaniment such as nuts or small nibbles, something many cocktail bars at this price point provide. Drink prices are comparable to London’s top cocktail bars, and with a service charge already included, it would have been a nice touch. Overall, Speak in Code offers creative cocktails and excellent, engaged service. However, the inability to book, the restrictive 90-minute limit, and the lack of complimentary snacks prevent it from being a truly outstanding experience. Hey, Thanks for sending through a detailed write up of your visit, and I'm glad you enjoyed many aspects of your visit. I appreciate everyone will have their own view on what an outstanding experience is - I will just highlight that every bar has it's own financial capabilities - such has giving out complimentary snacks. We have a snacks menu, at very reasonable prices. That's an expectation that isn't on us to manage. You might think it's a small touch but considering we have a food menu, it wouldn't make sense for us to give out complimentary food and discourage people away from our food menu. The cost to our business for serving a small bowl of pretzels for every table that comes in would be £3800 per yer all in, just for perspective. Demo 2: Genepi Chartreuse Elixir Kiwi Soda Regarding the reservations - this is simply not true. We encourage reservations, and they're all made through our website with a cut off window of 2 hours. So if you were within that 2 hour window, and / or trying to make a reservation in person - we simply ask for all reservations to go through our website so that we can keep a fair amount of walk ins, and avoid promising tables to people that may not be there if someone makes a last minute reservation. Most of our seats on weekends are reserved, and we keep a small amount of walk in space available. On weekdays, we have a good mix of reservations available. If you come into the bar whilst out for dinner and try to make a reservation in person, missing the cut off window, then we treat everything as walk in availability to keep our availability fair for anyone. I wanted to clear up the reservations as it's incorrect. We encourage them, online, with a 2 hour cut off. Then it's walk ins only within that window if missed. I appreciate you have views that you wish to express online, but we're an independent business, and anything negative about an experience has more value being shared in house than online. Hope to catch you soon, Nathan

Interesting bar marked only by a sign at the entrance doing creative cocktails. Although you can see from the menu that lots of thought and work had gone into crafting these concoctions, some of the executions fell a little flat; the Demo 7 my partner ordered was uniquely creamy yet herby, yet Demo 1 and 12 were less nuanced than what I was expecting. When we were given the bill, we were mistakenly charged the cost of 4 cocktails instead of 3 which my partner noticed. The bartenders were apologetic and corrected the error immediately, but my partner and I still felt conflicted afterwards considering the difference in cost and my level of inebriation. I can see the owner is trying to take my review down - I do not appreciate your attempts to coerce me into downplaying our feelings. Price per person: £20–30 Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4

Hey - Appreciate the feedback. As always, flavour, value and quality will forever be a subjective matter to each individual. We’re happy with the drinks served, it’s a shame they missed for you. If you’d like to offer some perspective on how we’d make this drinks less flat, I’m always open for a chat. One thing I find dissapoiinting however, is that you think an independent business who can make human error would intentionally try to steal your money, which is the tonality of your accusation and that honestly hurts. To think a table service cocktail bar is intentionally trying to intoxicate people to a level of trying to overcharge and get away with it. We of course offer our apologies for the slip up, however I will have to take this as slanderous and report the review based on the tonality of it. If it was phrased - “They made a mistake in overcharging for one drink, corrected it but we still feel a little hard done by”, then I could accept that. Your accusation is what I don’t appreciate. We work long hours, late nights and bank holidays too - the most challenging weekends of our industry. Mistakes can happen. I’ll pass on to the team to be more vigilant. Thanks Nathan Nathan@speakincodebar.com

A great little speakeasy tucked away in Manchester. The atmosphere is exactly what you’d want , dark, cosy, and a world away from your typical city centre bar. Our server Ollie was brilliant. He knew the menu well and steered us towards drinks No.6, No.8 and No.9 , all three were spot on and well worth ordering. Really good, knowledgeable service. The focaccia with dip and truffle fries were both excellent, simple but done really well, perfect for sharing. Well worth a visit if you’re after something a bit different. We’ll be back.
